| President’s Message Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and get working? LWV-CC has the opportunity to continue our march toward an informed citizenry - but we need YOUR help - both financially and in person. LWV US President Kay Maxwell, our guest speaker for the LWV Texas convention banquet in April, reports that there is a new grant available to our League: “Grants are available for Leagues interested in participating in Safeguarding the U.S. Democracy: Promoting an Independent Judiciary by Defending the U.S. Constitution. Examples of programs that Leagues can put together for this project include: panel discussions, regional forums, online and paper Voters’ Guides, judicial candidates debates, and TV programs on judicial issues. “ LWV-CC can apply for these grants - but we need YOUR support! Let us know that you support our efforts by volunteering to work on one of our committees, help with the publication of The Voter, and/or by writing and mailing a check. See you at the Forum! Lois Huff, President, LWV-CC

2006 Program Planning
During our January Membership Meeting we conducted two activities. A
360 Degree self-evaluation enabled us to reflect on our role in the
community and to assess our effectiveness. The result was a minimal
report card: B on Voter Education, D on Community Education & a C
on Stimulate Voter Turnout. Additional roles not graded included Voter
Registration, Doing a Study and Taking Position on local issues. That
simple exercise should be helpful as we move forward. LWV-CC is strong
in Voter Services and our Program has been lots of talk without much
action. We’ve had interesting presentations with no measurable
outcomes.
Our 2004-2006 Program agenda discussion resulted in identifying four areas of interest:
4 Open Beaches Issues
4 Voter Education: Civics & Mechanics 4 Library Network 4 Healthcare Delivery System Keep in mind this is not a closed agenda. It would be wonderful to have additional topics and suggestions were introduced during the February meeting. LWV-CC is yours. The direction it takes is determined by the membership. The impact it makes is most certainly determined by the efforts of the membership. As you think about the focus of the LWV-CC 2006-2005 Programs please keep in mind the following: Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in. Submitted on 26 October 2004 by Marjorie Moore, Minds Eye Information Service, Belleville, IL, USA LWV-CC IS YOURS. Take ownership and develop a dynamic 2006-2005 Program agenda! Pat E. Mattocks, Vice President, Program
State Convention Update
Two months and counting—that's about all the time left before we host the April 21-23 LWV-Texas State Convention. The Friday night affair we have scheduled for April 21 should be a most enjoyable evening—a Happy Hour and dinner at Joe's Crab Shack, showing off our beautiful Corpus Christi Bay. We will sell $2 tickets at registration for wine or margaritas. The margaritas will be one ticket and wine will be two. We are also providing an appetizer tray. (continued on page 3)
