April Program: Bioterrorism, Part 2
The second presentation in our Bio-terrorism series is set for the April 20th meeting. Just researching the topic has proven to be enlightening. What was once referred to as the Bio-terrorism Program now has a new name, Public Health Preparedness (PHP) Program. I believe the name change was supposed to be less intimidating in some way. However, it really doesn’t matter how it’s dressed up or what attempts are made to give it a warm fuzzy title, the threats are still scary. Fortunately David Parrott, Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Coordinator for the Corpus Christi – Nueces County Health District, has agreed to provide an overview of the PHP Program. He will outline medical planning and response to PHP events. Mr. Parrott will address disease outbreaks, pandemic and bio-terrorism events. His presentation will also include Jurisdictional Planning and Response; Surveillance, Epidemiological investigations and Strategic National Stockpile Coordination. Occasionally I think about the ‘good old days’ when it was safe for a child to play in the park, the creek wasn’t polluted and neighbors knew one another. Then I remember everything really wasn’t really so perfect. Going back would include segregated schools, job discrimination, coal furnaces and polio. The reality is that we don’t live in Lake Winnebago. We live in Corpus Christi, with refineries and a major port, 160 miles from an international border. It is my sincere hope that after hearing David Parrott’s presentation we will all be able to rest a little easier. Pat E. Mattocks, Vice President, Program
