President’s Message

I wish to thank the LWV-CC Board and volunteers for all the hard work that they accomplish.   As we prepare for our annual meeting, the LWV-Texas State Convention, and the upcoming elections, I am constantly aware of how much these persistent women accomplish.

When women were granted the right to vote in 1920, history tells us that this right was the result of many long years of struggle.  But today, we have become accustomed to this right, and many citizens who can vote, do not.  Why?  One reason is that they simply do not feel that they know enough to vote.  These volunteers who work so hard for our League are wanting to help change that perception, and help others become informed and excited about the prospect of participating in our democracy.

Plan now to join us at the annual meeting on May 18.  You will get to learn more about the Port of Corpus Christi and their Cuban experiences, as well as meet the many League members who work diligently for our community.

Convention Update

The big day is upon us. The League of Women Voters ofTexas State Convention —April 21-23—is just about here—and I do mean here.

I hope all Corpus Christi members have signed up to attend the convention, at the Corpus Christi Omni Marina.

We still need volunteers to help us make this one of the best conventions ever.  We are providing doorkeepers, ushers, pages, a timekeeper, registration workers and people for other similar jobs. Don't hesitate because you think you don't know what to do—we'll have training sessions, and remember that volunteers can attend without paying the registration fee.   Call me for instructions on how to mark your registration form to indicate you are a volunteer.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 21, and three workshop sessions are scheduled that afternoon.   During Workshop Session I, 1-2:15 p.m.,"Convention 1, 2, and 3 for First-Timers" and "Raising Voter Registration to New Heights" are scheduled.

Workshop Session II, 2:30–3:45 p.m.offers "Membership:  Connect and Engage" and "Texas Environmental Outlook 2006." The choices at Workshop Session III, 4–5:15 p.m. are "How To Write a Funding Letter" and "How To Lobby."

Coffee breaks are being generously sponsored by:
  • International Bank of Commerce
  • Kim Erwin, Owner of Realty World Island Properties and Realty World Corpus Christi

Our Friday night program, "Dinner and a Stroll by the Bay, will be held at Joe's Crab Shack on the Lawrence Street T-Head at 6 p.m. Cost is $25.

The Plenary Session Saturday will open at 8:30 a.m. The 9th Annual Environment Awareness Awards will take place from noon until 1:45 at the hotel. Cost for the luncheon is $40.

Kay Maxwell, the League of Women Voters–US president, will be the speaker at Saturday's banquet, which is scheduled from 7–9 p.m., also at the hotel. The evening will include a live auction, with John Bell as auctioneer. The banquet price is $45.

The convention will end with the second Plenary Session Sunday.

If you haven't already made plans, do it  now. Mark April 21-23 on your calendar and join us at the Omni for a fun and productive experience.
